What DOESN'T Roarke know how to do? What is he NOT good at?

Just a fun topic for everyone to think about: we know that Roarke is pretty much good at everything except the BBQ, but after a few tries, he’s now good at that too. He’s even good at golf even though he dislikes golf. So, I want to know your speculative opinions: What is Roarke NOT good at? What DOESN’T he know how to do?

I will go first here: I don’t think he knows how to play the bagpipes, and probably would not ever have the ambition to even try, much less become good.

Ok, I have a few…

Doing nothing. Roarke is terrible at genuinely relaxing. Even on holiday, he inevitably finds a business to buy, a problem to solve, a system to investigate, or some way of working.

Accepting that he can’t fix something. This is probably his biggest weakness. Money, intelligence, contacts and technology allow him to solve most problems. When Eve is hurting and there is genuinely nothing he can do, he struggles.

Staying out of Eve’s investigations. Tell Roarke, “Don’t touch the computer,” and approximately fourteen seconds later he’s committing several creative violations of NYPSD procedure.

Following rules he considers stupid. He understands rules perfectly well. He simply regards many of them as suggestions intended for other people.

Not interfering when Eve is in danger. Rational Roarke understands she’s a cop. Husband Roarke couldn’t care less about Rational Roarke’s opinion.

Dealing calmly with Eve being injured. He’s improved enormously, but this remains one of his emotional pressure points. He can face danger himself without blinking; Eve bleeding is another matter entirely.

Separating Eve’s job from Eve. He respects what she does, but when her duty demands something dangerous or self-destructive, that respect collides spectacularly with his need to protect her.

Singing?. I don’t remember the books establishing Roarke as a particularly talented singer. Given that Nora has bestowed approximately every other gift upon the man, I’d quite enjoy discovering that Roarke absolutely cannot carry a tune. :joy:

Roarke can sing, unfortunately. :joy:

“Well, Jess has worked out this one number. He ran it by me last night.” She looked at Roarke, making it up as she went along. “It’s a duet, really impressive. And we thought, if for the party—the live portion of the performance—you could do it with Mavis.”

He blinked, lost all interest in crops. “Do what with Mavis?”

“Perform it. Actually it was my idea,” she continued, nearly losing it when he paled. “You’ve got a nice voice. In the shower, anyway. The Irish comes out. I mentioned it, and Jess thought it was fabulous.”

He managed to shut his mouth, but it wasn’t easy. Slowly he reached over to disengage the monitor. “Eve—”

“Really, it would be great. Leonardo has a terrific design for your costume.”

“For my—” Thoroughly shaken, Roarke got to his feet. “You want me to wear a costume and sing a duet with Mavis? In public?”

“It would mean so much to her. Just think of the press we could get.”

“Press.” Now he blanched. “Christ Jesus, Eve.”
